This large suburban property had become, over the years, shaded by the growth of large oaks and redwoods. Plantings, such as roses, that had thrived in the more open conditions, were now lank and refusing to bloom. The clients came to me with the comment "Friends say that they like our yard, but we want them to see and recognize it as a garden." Working with the existing conditions of primarily evergreen shade, we chose the concept of WOODLAND GARDEN. Small trees, shrubs, and perennials were chosen that grew as understory plantings: Dogwood, Chinese Fringe Tree, daphne, camellias, hostas, ferns, ajuga, and others. The former rose garden , now semi-shaded, became a water garden, with small water fall to take up the grade change, and a variety of aquatic plants. Lawn areas in decline were developed into a woodland walk of stepping stones and a shade-tolerant perennial border. |
